Local Bakery Gem: The Sweet Shoppe (winner of Cupcake Wars!)
It’s hard to think about Blue Ridge without mentioning this amazing local bakery. The Sweet Shoppe, owned by Susan and Nikki, is an award winning full service bakery offering cupcakes, breakfast pastries, old fashioned and custom cakes, cheesecakes, tiramisu, cookies, caramel apples and French Macarons. All of their products are made in house, from scratch.
About the Owners
In 2011, friends Nikki Kaylor and Susan Catron had a chance encounter that sparked a long conversation about the passion they both shared for baking. Nikki grew up making chocolates in her grandmother’s kitchen alongside all the women in her family, and Susan had a long history of cupcake baking with her mother. They learned they each had the dream of one day owning a shop where others could enjoy their baking talents. With a lot of faith and love, they decided to go into business together to bring their talent to the southern masses: fresh, made from scratch desserts served with classic Southern hospitality.
Winning Talent in an Award Winning Bakery
While they quickly became local-famous, their two stints on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars made them world famous! They were the Season 6 winners in 2012, and the rest is history. Since then, they’ve won other awards, including USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice Award for our World's Best Chocolate Chip Cookies (2023) and Best of Georgia Regional Bakery (2023).
Best Selling Cupcakes and More
Their best sellers include the Miss Scarlet, which is a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing; and the Coconut Cream Pie cupcake, a vanilla cupcake with coconut cream filling and coconut cream icing, topped with shredded coconut. They are also incredibly popular for the flavors that made them winners on Cupcake Wars: Raspberry Lemon, Carrot, S’mores, and Peanut Butter and Jelly. They also offer an array of gluten free options, including vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, coconut, and more.
Beyond cupcakes, they also offer full size, magazine-worthy cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, and croissants. You can checkout their seasonal rotations here. The Triple Threat Chocolate cake is not to be missed, and the White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake will leave you craving more! October is their busiest month, when they bake over 1300 cupcakes a day- so if you’re here in the fall make sure to go early to score your favorite flavor.
Whether you want to dine in at the cafe, or get your treats to go, make sure to make The Sweet Shoppe of the South a “must go” on your next visit to Blue Ridge!
